Alexander Kopatz

I am a biologist and researcher by training and a self-taught photographer living in Trondheim, Norway.

I am a researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) in Trondheim. In short: I am studying brown bears and other large carnivores in Norway, Finland and Sweden. More information on my research including a list of my scientific publications can be found here.

My photography focuses on the Arctic and its harsh, still fragile structures in ever-changing ambient light. My photos have been published as album covers, in web- as well as print magazines. If there is time, I write for outdoor photography magazines and websites. An almost complete list on my published work you can find here and also on Discogs.

PODCAST

I had a chat with Simon, from Simon på tur, on his podcast. Only by foot, Simon crossed Norway the whole length from the southern tip to the north cape two times. We talked about outdoors, my work, brown bears, photography and Norway. Unfortunately, in German only.

TESTIMONIALS

  • Go70North takes some of the most beautiful pictures for the Archivedubs & Faint Music labels, in collaboration with Warmth to put out some of the most beautiful music and associated vibrant aesthetics […] - Source: Ambiance Glitters.

  • "Alexander Kopatz lives in Norway [...] While primarily “a biologist and researcher studying brown bears”, he is also a stunning landscape photographer.  His work is a perfect match for the output of Spain’s Faint, run by Agustín Mena, who also runs the Archives label and records as SVLBRD and Warmth." [...] "The covers are cold wonders, inviting the viewers to consider the beauty of the forlorn season." - Source: A Closer Listen: The Winter Music of Faint by Richard Allen.

  • AG: Can you talk a bit about how you came to know cinematic mood capturer and prodigious photographer go70north AKA Alexander Kopatz? The collaboration work the two of you continue to do is very special to us — the first immediate prevalent example being the most recent Faint release: SVLBRD’s Stratus (Remodel). - Agus: The first time I learned about his work was through the blog of Scott Hansen (Tycho). I was fascinated by the color of his photographs, you can almost feel the warmth in them. There is something special in his work, I can’t tell if it is the light, the noise, or the color. Alexander Kopatz is also a charming person. I asked him to use his photographs for the second CD release on Archives, almost three years ago, and since then we have collaborated on another 16 releases. 4 or 5 forthcoming releases are also in the making. It is the perfect visual aspect for the music of the label, as was the work of our sadly passed away Brian Young, with which there were many projects in mind. - Source: Friday Artist Feature 06 + Interview: Agus Mena // Warmth (Archives + Faint) on Ambiance Glitters.

  • “I bought it for the cover by Alexander Kopatz. Sorry, but I did.” - Source: Irregular Crates: Caught in The Wake Forever - Waypoints.

  • “The album […] features an exemplary cover supplied by photographer Alexander Kopatz of go70north.com.” - Source: Frankly Green Bay

  • “J: Your label catalogue(s) are really impressive. The design of the CDs/cover are consistent and recognizable. As I saw you always work with the same person for the visual part of your labels. How was this connection established? - W: Most of the pictures are from Alexander Kopatz. I remember that I saw an entry with photographs of him in ISO50, Tycho’s blog and I started following him on social networks and later wrote to him. His pictures are magnificent and my idea, from the beginning, was that the image of the label was linked to nature, so they are always perfect.” - Source: Joachim Spieth
